Boots is the UK’s leading pharmacy retailer, and offer a brilliant but under-utilised vaccination program. The ask for the IBMiX Design Studio was to understand and improve the pain points in this service with a view to increasing uptake. We kicked off with user testing, and followed up with weekly design sessions and stakeholder workshops to define the requirements of the improvements and end-to-end user experience. To ensure cohesion in the Boots’ digital presence we utilised their Design System for design and build. This DDL is still in its infancy so we used this project to contribute to its growth, designing all new components with in line with best practise.
As the design lead, I spent time working with the development teams to maximise accessibility and usability within the designs. Seasonal Vaccines are nominally intended for the elderly, who in turn are both traditionally less tech-savy and are more likely to have visual impairments or other conditions which need to be designed for. Therefore our goal was to make the designs intuitive, which we did by presenting only core information and creating a portal-like journey. We followed WCAG AA guidelines and maintained colour contrasts throughout, as well as building in keyboard navigation and removing imagery to improve the screen-reader experience. Since deployment we’ve seen a 36% increase in organic traffic and a 6% decrease in bounce rates with these figures expected to grow in 2023.
